Twelfth century signifies the rise of the greatest empire led by Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan ( 1162 – August 18, 1227 ) was the most powerful, ferocious and brutal emperor of all time. He was the founder and Great Khan of Mongal Empire which became the largest contiguous empire in history. Present-Day Mongolians regard him as “Founding father of Mongolia”.

 1.His real name wasn’t Genghis Khan !

His real name was Temüjin and was named after a warlord Temüjin-üge whom his father had just captured. Temüjin was acknowledged as Khan of the consolidated tribes and took the new title”Genghis Khan” meaning “Great Khan” in 1206.

2. Born Ruler !

According to legends, Genghis was born with a blood clot in his clenched fist which foretold it that he will be a great emperor.

3. Aged 10, he killed his older half-brother for not sharing food he had gathered. 
4. Killing Machine  -_-

He was responsible for the deaths of as many as 40 Million People ( Yes !! 40 Million ). Scholars estimate that he may have killed a full 3/4 of modern day Iran population, 2/3 of modern day China during his war with Khwarezmid empire & Jin Dynasty.

The Mongals attack may have reduced the entire world population by as much as 11 percent. This meant large areas of cultivated land grew into trees removing 700 Million Tons of Carbon Dioxide ( CO2 ) from the environment.


5. Fear is the best weapon !

Khan defeated a Russian army 4 times the size of his with the surviving leaders surrendering. They were executed by being laid under a wooden platform which the mongals danced and feasted upon.

Genghis Khan had molten silver poured into an enemy leader’s eyes and ears & has butchered many people, which made him the most feared ruler.

He believed that a man can be measured by the number of children he fathered. His harem included thousand of women and he had children with many of them.

For killing a Mongal diplomat Khan went on to wipe out the Khwarizm Empire. No living things was spared, not even animals. Skulls of the dead were piled in large pyramidal mounds.

Even if a town or city disobey under his rule then everybody in it will be executed. Policy was clear : Obey or Die

9. He was his own favorite.

Genghis Khan never allowed his likeness to be portrayed. The first images of him appeared after he died.

10. Brilliant Military Tactician 

Khan used fake retreats to draw out his enemies. He organised his army into decimal subsections of arbans( 10 soldiers), zuuns (100 soldiers), mingghans (1000 soldiers) and tumens (10,000 soldiers).

He had his men use captured enemies as Body Shields in battlefield.

11. He created one of the first International Postal System

Vast communication network was the key to success for Mongal Empire. He formatted a mounted courier service known as the “Yam” to keep abreast of military and political developments & maintain contact with his network of spies and scouts.


Mongal Empire was the biggest empire of all time with the maximum land area of 24 Million km² constituting 16.11% of world’s land area.

13. Greatest ruler of world & his death is a mystery.

Yes, no one knows how he died and where is he buried ? He wanted the location of his grave to be unknown, somewhere in Mangolia.

14. Mad King *GOT fans triggered*

No offence ! As I told cause of Khan’s death is unknown. Legends has it that at his funeral 40 virgins & 40 horses were sacrificed and the 2,000 guests were killed in order to keep burial site a secret.

15. The Great Khan lends his name to the Mongolia main airport in the city of Ulaanbaatar and his portrait appears on Mangolian currency.
